StolenWatchX (stolenwatchx.com), an online stolen-watch database, has launched a set of free tools for people buying pre-owned luxury watches. They include a Rolex serial-number-by-year decoder, guides to 56 Rolex reference numbers and a fake Rolex checklist. They sit alongside the company’s main service: a watch serial number check against more than 16,000 stolen and lost watch records.

The pre-owned luxury watch market has grown quickly, and theft has grown with it. In August 2023, the Watch Register reported more than £1 billion worth of stolen watches on its register (Swissinfo). Many stolen watches are resold privately, through marketplaces and social media, to buyers who never check the serial number.

“Most people buying a pre-owned watch check the price and the box, but never the serial number,” said Ben Adams, Founder of StolenWatchX. “We built StolenWatchX so anyone can check a serial against our stolen-watch database in under a minute before they hand over the money, and so theft victims can get their watch flagged where buyers will see it.”

New free tools for buyers

– Rolex serial numbers by year: decodes a Rolex serial number to its approximate production year, so buyers can check that it matches the model and the seller’s story.
– Rolex reference guides: cover 56 Rolex reference numbers, explaining what each reference means and what to check on it.
– Fake Rolex checklist: a step-by-step list of warning signs, with dedicated guides for the Submariner, Datejust, Daytona, GMT-Master II and Day-Date.

Help for theft victims

For people whose watch has been stolen, the free stolen watch report generator creates ready-to-use documents for the police, insurers, online marketplaces and social media in seven languages. Victims can also report a stolen watch so it can be added to the database that buyers search.

Available worldwide

StolenWatchX is available in eight languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese and Arabic. Buyers can search by serial number before buying from a dealer, marketplace seller or private individual.
